Our History

Born on Woodward

The Woodward Dream Cruise was born from a simple idea — celebrate the cars, the culture, and the community that made Woodward Avenue legendary. What started as a neighborhood gathering has grown into one of Metro Detroit's most anticipated annual events.

Every August, Woodward Avenue is transformed into a living museum of American automotive history from pre-war classics to modern exotics, the 16-mile radius cruise comes alive with the sights, sounds, and stories of over a century of car culture.

The City of Ferndale is proudly part of the larger Woodward Dream Cruise — the world's largest one-day automotive event — drawing over one million spectators and 40,000 vehicles to the Woodward corridor each year.

The Legend

Woodward Avenue

Woodward Avenue is more than a road — it's the birthplace of American car culture. In the 1950s and 60s, teenagers and gearheads from across Metro Detroit would cruise Woodward on summer nights, racing from drive-in to drive-in in their finest machines.

That spirit never died. Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise, and the nine participating communities, including the City of Ferndale, keeps that tradition alive for a new generation of enthusiasts, families, and fans.

Ferndale sits at the south of it all — Nine Mile Rd and Woodward Ave — the start and finish to experience the largest automotive cruising event gathering in the world.
